Sprint orienteering
Sprint orienteering is all about making decisions fast whilst running and reading your map. The courses test your map reading skills in complex environments such as university campuses, schools and parks. Therefore you need to assess route choice options quickly and then run as fast as you can without navigational errors. Thus the sport is both a mental and physical challenge. Moreover, you don’t have to be a an elite orienteer to enjoy the sport. This is because all ages and fitness levels are welcome. You’ll find others of your ability to challenge you.

Melbourne Sprint Weekend
Melbourne Sprint Weekend is your best opportunity to experience the thrill of sprint orienteering with 6 races held over 3 days. For example, the 4 new maps will excite the mind and the 2 revisited areas are an opportunity to not make the same mistakes you made last time. In addition, on the last day you’ll have the opportunity to ran and then watch the elites complete in the knock-out sprint competition.

The TIPS for MSW 2022 video might help improve your skills. Perhaps you’ve made these mistakes before! For example, I made the basic mistake of not checking the map and description for the first control. Therefore I didn’t notice that the control was on the upper level. Consequently at least 20 seconds were lost and that meant a few places lower in the finish order. (similar to the video at 1 minute in)

MSW Logo

STU ART CONCEPTS designed the Melbourne Sprint Weekend logo originally for the 2020 series.
CONCEPT….First, to form M, S and W orienteering control circles break the line and create the logo letters. Second, the flow line created represents an orienteering course with with many twists and turns around the features on a map. In addition it suggests the Yarra River which is the main river flowing through Melbourne. Lastly, as the event is organised by Orienteering Victoria, the logo uses their colour pallet.
MSW Bulletins

Two bulletins are needed for the event to outline all the details for participants. The first gives basic information, preliminary details for each of the 6 events and how to enter. Whereas the second outlines all the details of getting to and participating in the events, the rules, points to note, course setter notes plus much more. STU ART CONCEPTS did all the graphic design work for both these.
Orienteering
In addition to sprint orienteering, there is bush, park and street, and mountain bike orienteering. To discover more about these, visit the Orienteering Victoria website.
